Lily

History

Young Lily / Family Life

Lily was often described as a colorful child. She was always quick to smile, even at a stranger, ready to share anything she had with someone who wanted it, and she was incredibly resilient. Her parents let her learn her own lessons - if she was told the stove was hot and touched it anyway, she learned not to do it again after that. They didn't believe in coddling her, though she always knew she was loved.

When she was four, Lily wanted to be a gymnast. When she was five, a ballerina. When she was six and had watched the firemen put out the fire next door, she wanted to be a firefighter. When she was seven, she came to the horrible conclusion she didn't know what she wanted to do with her life. Despite repeated assurances from her family that this was normal, Lily was certain she had to know - otherwise, how could she begin to work toward that goal?

It was about this time that Lily discovered what she could do. It had been an accident, the first time - as it always was. She'd broken one of her mother's tea cups when she'd tried to put it back up on a shelf that was too high for her to reach. Distraught and slightly panicked, she'd held the pieces together and simply willed the cup to fix itself. While she was surprised that it did (and not perfectly, though she could only see the tiny cracks because she knew they were there), she somehow expected it. Deep down, she'd always known she was different. Special.

She mostly kept her secret to herself, though one time Petunia caught her at it. Petunia, of course, was disapproving. This occasionally incited Lily to show off, even when (or especially when) she knew better. Like the time at the playground when she leapt off the moving swing and floated unharmed to the ground, or when she caused a flower's petals to open and close in her hand.

While she wasn't aware of her audience, there was one. A poorly dressed boy from the poorest section of the town had been watching her and her sister. Mostly her, as she'd discover later. Severus Snape was the one who told Lily what she was, and introduced her to the world of magic. She latched onto him immediately, flinging questions at him and listening eagerly to his answers. She had an insatiable curiosity, and quickly enough they became best friends.

Naturally enough, Petunia was jealous of the friendship, of the fact that this poorly dressed misfit of a boy had something to share with her sister that she didn't. Thus began the rift between the girls which would only widen as they grew older, fueled by jealousy and resentment.

School Years

On her very first train ride, Lily met a group of boys that she didn't like very much. At that point, she never could have imagined that one of the boys was going to be her future husband. They were rude and arrogant and she didn't care for them in the least - and they elected Severus as their group target which only served to increase Lily's dislike for them.

Lily was dismayed that she was sorted into the house with the obnoxious boys rather than the house Severus was sorted into. Nevertheless, they promised to maintain their friendship despite the difference in their houses. At first, this was easily enough accomplished, but over time they began to slip apart. They developed interests separate from each other, gained their own groups of friends, and realized there were some things they were never going to see eye-to-eye on.

She didn't like his friends, and she liked them less as they all got older, as the 'pranks' because more and more malicious. She spoke to Sev about it on a number of occasions, but he remained blind to her side of the argument - they weren't playing, and they weren't learning magic for the sake of magic. They were hurting people, and laughing about it, and if he wasn't careful, he'd end up just like them. As they got older, their arguments were more and more heated on the subject, often ending with her stalking off in frustration.

The last straw in their friendship came on a day just after their last exam before school let out for the summer. Potter and his friends were up to their usual hijinx (and honestly, Potter and his mates weren't much better than Severus' friends in her eyes), with Severus as their target. As she moved to his defense as she often did (though with slightly less frequency as it became more and more difficult to justify the defenses), he screamed the worst possible thing he could at her. He called her a mudblood, and she would have sworn she felt the last tenuous thread of their friendship snap with that word. It was over, and while it hurt like hell, Lily knew she had to move on. Move away. Severus, in that word, had chosen his path leaving Lily to find her own.

Most of her sixth year was spent reestablishing who she was without Severus. She no longer had a best friend (though she had plenty of other friends), nor did she ever think she'd find someone she connected to quite like she had with Severus. She became friends with a quieter, bookish boy, a fellow prefect, who happened to hang about with Potter's crowd. It was through Remus that she got to know James a bit better, and by her seventh year, she was willing to give him a chance.

Early in her seventh year, after escorting in a first year who'd gotten a bit ill watching a quidditch match, Lily was accosted by a masked individual that she assumed to be a Death Eater (or the son of one aspiring to climb the ranks). Given her blood status, she wasn't surprised by the attack but at the same time she wasn't going to stand for it. While she didn't know who it was, she became a little more observant.

In the following weeks, she learned the identity of her attacker and let him know that she knew who he was. Something of a silent battle of wills followed after that, and they became something of nemeses to one another. Much like James and Sirius picked on Severus on the sly, Lily engaged in battles of wits and wills with this Death Eater in training. She never told anyone, and as far as she knew, neither did he. While there was no 'winner' in this match (each of them had bested the other at some point when crossing in the halls), it was her first real taste of the war.

Academically, Lily was a determined worker. She did well in most of her classes, though some required more work and focus than others. She had a knack for potions (which caught Professor Slughorn's attention and netted her an invitation to his Slug Club) and she wasn't half bad at charms. Transfiguration, however, was a struggle. The fact that Potter and his friends seemed to have it come so easily to them made it doubly annoying for her when she couldn't master the simple things on the first couple of goes but actually had to work extra hard at it.

She was made prefect in her fifth year (and head girl in her seventh), which she took very seriously. She never hesitated to cite rules and call students on their behavior. While she endured such nicknames as teacher's pet, she didn't pay them much attention. She did start to relax a bit toward the end of her sixth year - though to this day she'll swear that it had nothing at all to do with the fact she was warming up to Potter.

After School

Upon exiting school, Lily was almost immediately swept up into the war when she (and James and Sirius and Remus and Peter) were all recruited into the Order of the Phoenix. As she is still somewhat in training, she is doing a lot of background and behind the scenes work. While it is tricky trying to find a balance between working for the Order, her relationship with James, and attempting to find gainful (and useful) employment, she's still managing to make it work.

Personality

Lily is generally outgoing and very friendly. She has been described as vivacious, and she's often armed with a laugh or a grin. Which isn't to say she's happy all the time - far from it. Like any teenage girl, she has her moods, her dark times, her sullen, sulky days. She prefers to be happy, of course, but that's hardly her call.

While she is outgoing and friendly, she's highly disinclined to put up with bullshit, regardless of its form. She isn't a fan of pranks - especially malicious ones.

She does have a temper, and can hold a grudge like nobody's business if it comes to that. The more hurt she is, the harder she'll hold onto the grudge. She does have a stubborn streak, and is (very) occasionally the epitome of Gryffindor recklessness. She does generally think things out first, but when backed into a corner, all bets are off.

A smart girl, Lily didn't often have trouble with her schoolwork. She's a fair hand with potions simply because she loves the work - and the fact she has a knack for it. She is the sort who prefers to have her work done and out of the way before she takes any time to play or have fun or indulge herself in her favorite activities.

Lily is an open, honest, and caring person. She can't tell a lie to save her life, and she's fairly easy to read - her heart is on her sleeve and her eyes betray her emotions even when (or especially when) she's trying to hide them.
